🎯 Why Add Pieces?

Each piece in ModusPractica represents a complete work you're learning. You'll break it down into smaller sections in the next step, making complex pieces manageable and trackable.

3

Break Your Piece Into Sections

Now let's divide your piece into practice sections. This is where ModusPractica's smart scheduling really shines!

  • Click on your piece in the Dashboard to open the details page
  • Click ➕ Add Section
  • Define your section:
    • Description: e.g., "Introduction (Bars 1-8)"
    • Bar Range: e.g., "1-8" or "A1-A8"
    • Difficulty: Choose from Easy, Average, Difficult, or Mastered
    • Target Repetitions: How many times to practice per session (default: 3)
  • Click Save Section
  • Repeat for each section of your piece
💡 Section Tips:
• Keep sections small (4-8 bars for complex passages, 8-16 for easier ones)
• Use descriptive names like "Exposition", "Development", "Left hand arpeggios"
• Start with "Average" difficulty - you can adjust it later based on your progress
• Break difficult passages into even smaller chunks

🧠 The Science Behind Sections

ModusPractica uses the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve to schedule each section independently. By breaking your piece into manageable chunks, the app can optimize when you review each part, ensuring you practice exactly when your memory needs reinforcement - not too early (wasting time) or too late (forgetting).

During a practice session:

  • Timer: Tracks how long you spend on each section
  • Repetition Counter: Click ✓ Attempt Successful each time you play it correctly
  • Failure Tracking: Click ✗ Attempt Failed if you make mistakes (helps the algorithm adjust)
  • Difficulty Adjustment: If a section feels too easy or hard, change its difficulty during the session
  • Notes: Add notes about what worked or what needs attention
🎉 What Happens After a Session?

ModusPractica automatically calculates when you should practice this section next based on:
  • Your performance (successes vs. failures)
  • The section's difficulty
  • How many times you've practiced it before
  • Your personal learning curve (improves over time!)
The better you perform, the longer the interval before the next review!
5

Track Your Progress

ModusPractica offers powerful tools to visualize and understand your learning progress!

📈 Practice Charts:

  • Click 📈 Practice Charts in the Dashboard
  • Select a piece and section to view your Success Ratio Trend Chart
  • See your progress over the last 7 sessions with color-coded learning zones:
    • Too Hard: Below 60% - Consider breaking into smaller sections
    • Exploration: 60-80% - Normal learning phase
    • Consolidation: 80-90% - Ideal practice zone!
    • Mastery: 90-95% - Nearly perfected
    • Overlearning: 95-100% - Time to reduce practice frequency
  • Adjust how many sessions to display (3, 5, 7, 10, or ALL)
  • Toggle to include or exclude deleted sessions

🎯 Understanding Your Success Ratio

The chart shows cumulative rolling average - not just individual sessions, but your overall trend. This gives you a realistic picture of your progress over time. The goal is to stay in the Consolidation zone (80-90%) for optimal learning - challenging enough to grow, but not so hard that you're frustrated.

📊 Statistics Page:

  • Click 📊 Statistics in the Dashboard sidebar
  • View total practice time and session history
  • See which pieces and sections get the most attention
  • Track your consistency over weeks and months

📅 Calendar View:

  • Click 📅 Calendar in the Dashboard sidebar
  • See all scheduled practice sessions at a glance
  • Color-coded by piece for easy identification
  • Plan your practice week ahead of time
💡 Pro Tip: Check the Practice Charts after every 3-4 sessions to see if you're in the optimal learning zone. If a section is consistently in "Too Hard", consider breaking it into smaller chunks or reducing the target repetitions.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the scheduling algorithm work?
ModusPractica uses the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, which predicts how quickly you forget information. Each time you successfully practice a section, the app calculates the optimal time before you should review it again. This interval grows longer as you master the material, maximizing retention while minimizing practice time.

The algorithm is also data-driven: It learns from your personal practice history. Your success rates, failure patterns, and performance consistency are analyzed to personalize the scheduling. The more you use ModusPractica, the better it understands your individual learning curve and adapts intervals to match your specific memory retention patterns.
Q: What if I miss a scheduled practice session?
No problem! Sections become "overdue" but remain in your practice queue. The algorithm adjusts - if you've forgotten the material, the next interval will be shorter. If you still remember it well, the interval may still increase.
Q: How do I mark a section as "Mastered"?
During a practice session, if you perform a section perfectly multiple times, you can change its difficulty to "Mastered". The algorithm will then schedule it less frequently, allowing you to focus on newer or more difficult material.
Q: What do the colored zones in Practice Charts mean?
The zones represent different stages of learning:
Too Hard (0-60%): Material is too challenging - break it down further
Exploration (60-80%): Normal learning phase with mistakes
Consolidation (80-90%): Sweet spot for optimal learning!
Mastery (90-95%): Nearly perfected, practice less frequently
Overlearning (95-100%): Already mastered, reduce practice time

Your goal is to move sections gradually from Exploration → Consolidation → Mastery over multiple sessions.
Q: Can I practice sections that aren't due today?
Yes! In the piece details page, you can start a practice session for any section at any time. However, practicing sections before they're due may not be the most efficient use of your time according to the Ebbinghaus principles.
Q: What's the difference between "Target Repetitions" and actual practice?
"Target Repetitions" is a goal you set (e.g., "I want to play this 3 times per session"). During practice, you click "Attempt Successful" each time you play it correctly. The algorithm uses both values - the target helps plan session length, while your actual performance affects future scheduling.

Q: Does ModusPractica automatically save my work?
Yes! After you use "Save Profile To" for the first time, ModusPractica automatically saves to that location:
• Every 5 minutes during active use
• When you close the browser tab
• When you switch to a different profile

This works in Chrome and Edge only (browsers with File System Access API support). In Firefox/Safari, you'll need to manually save using "Save Profile To" after each session.

Visual indicator: You'll see a ⚠️ warning next to your profile name if there are unsaved changes.
Q: Will my data be lost if I clear my browser cache?
Yes, if you clear localStorage. This is why regular backups using "Save Profile To" are essential! Save to your cloud storage for maximum safety. The auto-save feature helps, but always keep a backup copy in case of browser issues or if you need to switch computers.
Q: Can I use ModusPractica on multiple devices?
Absolutely! Save your profile to cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.), then use "Load Profile From" on your other device. Remember to save after each session to keep data synchronized.
Q: What browsers work best?
Chrome and Edge offer the best experience with advanced file saving features (File System Access API). Firefox and Safari work too, but with limited file management - you'll need to manually download/upload profile files each time.
