1. Synaptic strengthening (Long-Term Potentiation / LTP)
The biology:
Learning means the connections between brain cells
(synapses) grow stronger. This process is called long-term
potentiation (LTP). When LTP occurs, neurons communicate

been upgraded.
The break requirement:
Research shows that if you stimulate neurons (practise) and
keep going again within a few minutes, no additional
synapses are strengthened. Only when you leave at least one

Neurons need time to move physical building materials to the
cell membrane. Without this construction time, strengthening
simply cannot take place.
2. The road construction analogy
The principle:
Why can you not simply play for three hours straight while

The comparison:
Think of road works. When a road needs repair, it must be
closed. You cannot resurface a road while cars are racing
over it. The same applies to your brain: while you are
using a specific network to play, the brain cannot
restructure and strengthen that network at the same time.
You must leave the piano so the “construction
crew” can do its work.
3. Shift to more stable brain regions
The research:
Brain scans show that when you first learn a new passage,
the prefrontal cortex (working memory) is working at full
capacity.
After 5.5 hours of rest:
When participants return after 5.5 hours of rest, brain
activity has shifted to deeper motor regions. The memory has
become more stable and demands far less mental effort. This
shift happens only during the rest period.

Friday, Sunday, Tuesday). Then take one full week off from
that passage.
Phase 3 β After one week of rest
Play the passage three days in a row again (for example
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Then take two full weeks off

Phase 4 β After two weeks of rest
Play the passage three days in a row once more to anchor it
firmly.
Important:
“Taking a week off” does not mean not touching
the piano for a week. It means leaving that specific bar or
passage untouched for a week. Use the freed time to work on
other pieces or phrases.

digital calendar (such as Google Calendar) or a planning

Do not plan months ahead:
You do not need to write out the entire schedule for the

information at once. Trying to master a whole page in one
go leads to cognitive overload.
How to apply it:
Divide a difficult bar or phrase into tiny blocks β often
just two to four bars, or even a single transition between
two chords. Move to the next block only when the previous
one is stable. Then use the glue technique: connect block A
and block B.
3. Isolate the problem (Targeted Error Correction)
The principle:
Playing the whole piece from the beginning each time just
to reach one difficult bar wastes time and scatters your
focus.
How to apply it:
Pinpoint exactly where it breaks down. Is it fingering? A
leap? A rhythmic deviation? Play only the two notes just
before the trouble spot through to one note into it. Solve
the specific mechanical problem before placing the bar back
in the context of the melody.
4. Practice with variation (Interleaved & Varied Practice)
The principle:
Our brains learn faster when a movement is repeated under
slightly varying conditions. Mindlessly playing the same
passage twenty times dulls concentration.
How to apply it:
Vary how you work on a passage. For example, play a
difficult run of sixteenth notes a few times in dotted
rhythm (longβshortβlongβshort), once extremely staccato,
or with changing dynamics (from pp to ff).

3. Phase 2 β The Practice Phase
What happens:
Now that the basics have been learned correctly at a
conscious level, the subconscious takes over the motor
patterns β similar to cycling or driving.

This is the phase that becomes genuinely enjoyable.
Playing grows increasingly effortless, smoother, and faster.
How to apply it:
Use attentive repetition to build tempo step by step. Let
the subconscious take over automation without rushing.

Stopping at “the click”:
Thinking you are done as soon as you can play a passage

closely. Notice the visual shapes of your hands on the keys
and the specific physical movements (gestures). If you get
stuck, reopen the score briefly only to find the specific
anchor point, close it again immediately, and try once more.
3. E β Eyes
The goal:
Switch off visual dependence completely and rely on auditory
memory and physical feel (proprioception).
How to apply it:
Place your hands on the starting notes and close your eyes
(or look away from the keyboard). Play the passage purely by
ear and by the physical feel of the distances between the
keys. If this is difficult, take one step back: look at
your hands once deliberately to correct the physical feel,
then close your eyes again immediately.
4. M β Mind
The goal:
Active mental anchoring without physical support.
How to apply it:
Rest your hands quietly in your lap and close your eyes.
Play the passage entirely in your mind. Visualise precisely
how your hands move across the keys, hear the music in your
inner ear, and feel the physical tension and movement in
your fingers as if you were really playing.

The 5 slow-practice pitfalls & their solutions
1. The tempo is too slow (Ultra-Slow Practice)
The problem:
When the tempo is so slow that you have to stop after every

or neural pathways. Ultra-slow playing is physically and
mentally exhausting and often backfires: you re-read every
note on each repetition instead of ingraining a physical
movement (gesture).
The solution:
Make your practice chunk much smaller β sometimes just two or
three beats or eighth notes. Within that small fragment, play
at a steady, flowing tempo without stopping in between.
Temporarily push the tempo above your target speed so you can
feel the movement as one flowing gesture, then gradually
scale back to a controlled slow-practice tempo.
2. Repeating without a specific, clear goal
The problem:
Mindless repetition β “I'll just play it again” or
“I'll try to make it better” β switches your brain
into energy-saving mode. After ten minutes of unfocused
repetition, the result has often vanished an hour later.
The solution:
Before each repetition, ask yourself: what exactly am I going
to improve in this specific run? (For example: dynamics,
wrist relaxation, or fingering on note X.) Focus on one or two
concrete things per repetition.
3. Looping (endless continuous repetition)
The problem:
Repeating a passage in a continuous loop without stopping
ingrains wrong movements. In a real performance, you never
play the last note of a phrase straight back into the first
note of the same phrase.
The solution:
Insert a short pause of one to two seconds after each
repetition. Use that pause to evaluate briefly and set the
goal for the next run. This mini-pause also acts as a
micro-consolidation moment for your brain to process the
motor information.
4. Drilling the same small fragment too long
The problem:
Spending ten to twenty minutes on the same five-second
fragment β hundreds of repetitions β causes the brain to lose
interest and sharpness.
The solution:
Set a timer and work on the same small fragment for no more
than five minutes (ten minutes maximum for advanced players).
Then switch to another section or take a break. You can always
return to the difficult passage later in the session.
5. Never testing or varying the slow tempo
The problem:
Trying to speed up only at the end of the learning process
often reveals unexpected problems: the chosen fingering may
be too awkward at speed, or tension may creep into the hand
unnoticed.
The solution:
Occasionally test a passage deliberately at a much faster
tempo (or at target tempo). Use what you discover β rising
tension, faulty finger transitions β to adjust your slow
repetitions more precisely. Slow practice works only when the
physical movement you slow down matches the movement you need
at speed.
